Summer Painting & Sculpture Exhibition
Mike Graves - Lily Pond

For more than 100 years, the unique summer light of Old Lyme has inspired artists, infusing the landscape with its magical charm. Celebrating the joy of summer, the Lyme Art Association presents the Summer Painting & Sculpture Exhibition and has invited all artist members to submit their work for this special exhibition, to be juried by talented artists David A. Leffel and Sherrie McGraw.

Landscape, still life, figurative, portrait, and other representational works in oil, pastel, watercolor, and sculpture are welcomed.

Guest juror David A. Leffel is internationally recognized as a "20th Century Old Master," an honor that very few living American artists achieve. If we travel back to the 17th century Dutch Masters, most notably Rembrandt who casts a powerful shadow on Leffel's work, not only the shades of history but the artist’s immediacy awaken us to his brilliance. Leffel is said to be a true master of chiaroscuro, not only with his shadow and light but with brilliant visual concepts. David Leffel is highly sought after not only as an artist but highly respected as an "Artist who Teaches." Lyme Art Association is proud to welcome Mr. Leffel.

Guest juror Sherrie McGraw is a highly accomplished artist who firmly believes in developing as an artist by means of observation. She doesn't encourage any mechanical means such as measuring systems to provide the artists to capture a likeness or the essence of an object; the artist must observe through visual relationship for creative expression. Ms. McGraw was born in Wichita, Kansas and raised in Ponca City, Oklahoma. She is considered a highly accomplished painter and master draughtsman. Her serious art studies took place at the famous Art Students League in N.Y.C. after five years of college. She is also a practitioner of chiaroscuro "way of seeing." She has exhibited both nationally and internationally. She is the author of "The Language of Drawing: from an Artists Viewpoint.” The Lyme Art Association welcomes Sherrie McGraw.

"David and Sherrie have not only been my friends for many years but have also been a constant source of inspiration and enlightenment! I'm very pleased and excited to see both David and Sherrie, whom I know will curate a vibrant and exciting show at the LAA," said Lou Bonamarte, Vice President of LAA.

"It's a privilege to be asked to judge this show. The Lyme Art Association has stood for and promoted excellence in representational painting through the decades. This show, open to rising new talent as well as established professionals, is a benchmark for realism throughout the world,” said David Leffel.
